This is the Maracus waterfall. We were guided through slippery mud, moss that you could slip on for miles, and rocks the sizes of elephants.

Inauguration Day

We all stayed home from school and work to watch the Inauguration of Barack Obama. Many of the adults we spoke with either watched from home, or streamed it at work. Trinidad was celebrating as much as we were! It was quite an event to watch - and made me really wish I had been in DC! After wards we hiked up the Maracas Waterfall - a truly impressive fall. It seemed like a great way to end a great day.

Global Warming in Trinidad

It is supposed to be the dry season here, but it still rains almost daily, and last Saturday it poured, and poured and poured. Unfortunately, that was the day we chose to go to Maracas Beach - the most popular beach in Trinidad. After an hour of driving on windy roads, we arrived. The clouds were rolling in over the Caribbean Sea and visibility was poor. Nonetheless, David and Patrick ventured out into the ocean and rodes waves. Tim ordered and ate the famous "Shark & Bake" and loved it. Catherine and I returned like wilted flowers. We have no pictures to show because we didn't want to wet the camera. Next time!

While dinner is being cooked...

Patrick and Tim do Martial Arts. This is becoming a routine after school. Catch up on electronics then get some exercise. The guys play lacrosse, or do Martial Arts, sometimes Catherine plays catch with Tim. I be cookin'. Tonight we had delicious coconut ice cream with fried plantains for dessert. (The boys chose the Danish butter cookies instead.)

Just like home... sort of...

Well, we mourned the loss of the Giants today (sorry Iggles fans) as we introduced our kind neighbors to American football. After a week of running around we chilled at the homefront. Tomorrow, Catherine starts school, we get cable and a car.... "God willin"... as is said frequently here in Trinidad.

We saw some great stuff yesterday on the Northeast coast. There is a large reef there so the waves break far out. Hence, these beaches are known for surfing. We saw some boards and surfers, but no one actually out in the water. We're told they go out in the morning. There were some dramatically rocky areas, and the proverbial lighthouse.

I have taken to cooking what is available and tonight's dinner consisted of fried plantains, rice, chicken, patchoi (bokchoy), chana (chick peas), and eggplant. Something for everyone, and no wheat! We have found food prices to be very expensive, along with everything else, and we all seem content to give up meat for the next few months. Still looking for fresh fish - the boats hadn't gotten in yesterday when we were headed home from the beach.
